McKenzie stuns Outlaws

Hampshire overhaul 179 target to reach finals day

Neil McKenzie: Hampshire batsman revived his side's run chase

Samit Patel: Notts all-rounder scored 60 off 33 balls and took three wickets

Neil McKenzie produced a brilliant knock to steer Hampshire through to finals day of this year's Friends Life T20 competition with a four-wicket win over Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

The South African kept his head to conjure up a match-winning unbeaten 79 - off 49 deliveries - an innings featuring nine fours and two sixes.

When the visitors, who were chasing 179 to win, had slumped 78-5 in the 10th over, it appeared that Nottinghamshire were well on their way to a comfortable quarter-final success.

But McKenzie, in partnership with Liam Dawson and Dimitri Mascarenhas, turned the game on its head.

Dawson's 30 off 18 and an unbeaten 19 (13) by Mascarenhas, paved the way for the Royals to cross the finishing line in the final over.

Last over

Off Andy Carter's concluding over, McKenzie smashed the final four balls for 14 runs, with Hampshire sealing victory off the penultimate ball when a quick-run two brought the scores level.

With Hampshire having lost one fewer wicket - and a better total assured from the last six overs - Nottinghamshire could not have turned the game around off the last ball which went for four anyway.

Earlier, Samit Patel smashed 60 from 33 balls - hitting seven fours and a six - as Notts compiled 178-7.

And Patel also took three Hampshire wickets but his performance was in vain.
