NatWest Pro40 - Division Two
Northamptonshire Steelbacks 222-7 (D J G Sales 96 no, N Boje 59) v Derbyshire Phantoms 223-4 (D J Birch 76)
Derbyshire beat Northamptonshire by 6 wkts
Dan Birch's one-day best of 76 helped Derbyshire cruise to a six-wicket win over injury-hit Northamptonshire at Wantage Road.
The 27-year-old hit eight fours and four sixes in his whirlwind 59-ball innings that put the visitors well on course to surpass Northants' total of 222-7.
After Johan van der Wath bowled Chris Rogers for 16, Birch shared a 111-run stand for the second wicket with Wavell Hinds, who hit a quick-fire 45.
Greg Smith (35 not out) and Dominic Telo (39) then continued the good work with a partnership of 65, as Derbyshire reached their target with more than four overs to spare.
David Sales had been the only home batsman to prosper as Ian Hunter's spell of 3-18 restricted the Steelbacks after they had been put into bat by visiting skipper Rikki Clarke.
The right hander rescued his side from the perilous position of 51-5 with a classy knock of 96 not out that included seven fours and two sixes.
Sales was fortunate to have been given a lifeline when Nayan Doshi dropped the simplest of catches at third man but quickly made the Derbyshire spinner pay for his missed opportunity.
His only real support though came from his captain, Nicky Boje, the former South Africa international making a defiant 59 before he was dismissed with the last ball of the 40th over.
