New Zealand XI vs England

England suffer three-wicket loss to a New Zealand XI in Queenstown

BJ Watling: Smashed an unbeaten 89

Neil Broom: Weighed in with 41

England's bowlers endured a day to forget as a New Zealand XI snatched a three-wicket win in Queenstown.

Having declared overnight with a lead of 333 England had a full day to bowl out the hosts and head into the Test series with a confidence boost.

However the attack failed to deliver, with Graham Onions in particular suffering, as New Zealand reached their target with over seven overs of play remaining.

BJ Watling's unbeaten knock was key for the hosts, with the wicketkeeper finishing with 89 from 122 balls, including eight fours and two sixes.

Hamish Rutherford, who is likely to face England again during the Test series, got the innings off to the perfect start with 33 off 42 balls.

And although he fell to Chris Woakes - with Nick Compton taking the catch - and then Stuart Broad bowled Carl Cachopa for a duck, England couldn't build on the platform.

Plundered

Tom Latham and Neil Broom shared a stand 64 for the third wicket before they were both removed in quick succession. Latham was caught behind off Graeme Swann for 48 and Broom was trapped leg before by Broad (2-90) for 41.

Dean Brownlie added 17 before he became Woakes' (2-67) second victim and at 154-5 England must have fancies their chances.

However Watling and Corey Anderson did their best to take the game away from the tourists. Anderson weighed in with 44 during the 82-run stand before Joe Root managed to bowl him.

Root (2-42) also removed Jimmy Neesham for 20 but Neil Wagner plundered 28 not out off 31 balls to see New Zealand to victory.

Onions, who finished with 1-131 in the first innings, conceded a further 82 runs off 16 wicketless overs to dent his hopes of a Test place.
