New Zealand vs England

England win to level series

Tourists triumph by 126 runs at the Basin Reserve

Sidebottom: five-wicket haul

England required just 90 minutes of the final day to complete a 126-run win over New Zealand in the second Test and square the three-match series at 1-1.

Ryan Sidebottom took two of the four wickets England required to finish with figures of 5-105, while James Anderson and Monty Panesar chipped in with one apiece as New Zealand were all out for 311, despite a battling 85 from Brendon McCullum.

New Zealand resumed on the fifth morning on 242-6 in pursuit of 438, but Sidebottom - armed with the second new ball - removed captain Daniel Vettori, caught at third slip by Alastair Cook for a duck, in the day's second over to effectively end the hosts' already-slim hopes.

The Nottinghamshire left-arm seamer followed up six overs later with the wicket of Kyle Mills (13) to complete his third five-wicket haul in Tests and leave New Zealand on the brink of defeat at 270-8.

And although McCullum and Mark Gillespie added 41 in 11.1 overs for the ninth wicket, it was only delaying the inevitable.

The introduction of Anderson - bowling with the aid of painkillers due to the ankle injury he picked up while playing football after stumps on the third evening - hastened the conclusion.

Four deliveries after Andrew Strauss at first slip dropped an edged drive off McCullum, Anderson (2-57) had Gillespie (9) caught behind.

And Panesar (1-53) sealed the victory in the next over when McCullum (85) holed out to Sidebottom on the leg-side to become the only victim of spin in the entire match.

The result was England's first Test success away from home since they beat India in Mumbai two years ago and fully justified the decision to drop experienced bowling duo Steve Harmison and Matthew Hoggard.

The series decider starts in Napier next Saturday and can be watched live on Sky Sports.
