Australia race to convincing 10-wicket win

Hughes: Led the way

Australia wasted little time in wrapping up a 10-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first Test at Wellington.

First Test Match Wellington Australia 459-5 dec (M J Clarke 168, M J North 112 no, S M Katich 79) & 106-0 (P J Hughes 86 no) v New Zealand 157 (D E Bollinger 5-28) & 407 (B B McCullum 104, T G McIntosh 83, D L Vettori 77, R J Harris 4-77) Australia beat New Zealand by 10 wkts

The Australia attack picked up four quick wickets to dismiss New Zealand for 407, while the openers needed just 23 overs to race to a victory target of 106 at the Basin Reserve.

The hosts had started the final day on 369-6 - with New Zealand's hopes resting on Brendon McCullum and Daryl Tuffey.

However when McCullum was dismissed for 104 in the fourth over, the home side's resistance quickly folded with Ryan Harris (4-77) doing the damage.

Having started the final day on 94, McCullum hit back-to-back boundaries to bring up his fifth Test ton - but his fine knock came to an end when he edged Harris to Michael Clarke in the slips.

No trouble

Harris then had Tim Southee caught by Clarke for a duck, while the debutant trapped Brent Arnel leg before.

Mitchell Johnson then wrapped up the innings as he clean bowled Chris Martin for one to leave Tuffey stranded on 47 not out.

A total of 106 for victory was never likely to trouble Australia with Phillip Hughes and Simon Katich racing to the total.

Hughes hit 12 boundaries and a six in his 75-ball 86 not out, while Katich was happy to drop anchor and score an unbeaten 18 off 65 balls.

Both openers survived close leg before calls, while Hughes was dropped in the slips by Tim McIntosh.

And Hughes made the Black Caps pay as the Australians wrapped up victory on the stroke of lunch.
