Bopara: day to forget

The Mumbai Indians moved four points clear at the top of the Indian Premier League table with a tense four-wicket triumph over basement boys the Kings XI Punjab.

Opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan hit 50 from 40 balls as the Indians chased down a target of 164 with three balls to spare at the Brabourne Stadium.

With 19 still required, the match turned as medium pacer Ravi Bopara (3-31) leaked 13 runs from the penultimate over.

Bopara was hit for three boundaries, including two by Rajagopal Sathish (17no), to leave just six needed from six deliveries.

And victory was sealed in anti-climactic circumstances when Brett Lee (0-24), having conceded five from the first three balls, bowled a wide down the leg side.

Sent in

Essex all-rounder Bopara, who will find out on Wednesday if he has been included in England's World Twenty20 squad, had earlier been dismissed for one as the Kings XI made 163 all out after being sent in to bat.

Bopara was lbw to Zaheer Khan early on but his opening partner Shaun Marsh hit six fours and a six on the way to top scoring with 57 from 47 deliveries.

However, aside from a 49-run alliance with Mahela Jayawardene (20) for the third wicket, he lacked support as the Kings XI lost wickets regularly to be bowled out in exactly 20 overs.

Sri Lanka paceman Lasith Malinga was the star act, spearing in yorkers from his low-slung action to claim figures of 4-22, while India left-arm paceman Zaheer took 3-34.

Mumbai have now won six out of seven and sit at the head of the eight-team league, while the Kings XI are bottom with just one victory.
