A captain's knock from Brad Hodge helped the Melbourne Stars to a 20-run victory over the Perth Scorchers.
Hodge smashed 61 of 43 deliveries at the top of the order to provide the backbone to Melbourne's total of 161-6.
And the target proved to be too much for the Scorchers, with wickets falling at regular intervals as they fell short at 141-9.
The Stars had been rocking at 51-3 as Luke Wright, Mohammad Hafeez and David Hussey fell cheaply.
A 60-run stand in six overs between Hodge and Marcus Stoinis (25) turned the tide. Peter Handscomb also added a quick-fire 25, including two sixes, to see the Stars set the testing total.
Perth got off to a stuttering start in reply as Craig Simmons fell in the first over, while Mitchell Marsh and Sam Whiteman both failed to build on starts.
From 38-3, Adam Voges and Simon Katich attempted to claw the Scorchers back into the game.
The duo put on 54 runs for the fourth wicket but the departure of Voges for 29 was the beginning of the end.
Katich fought determinedly for 30, while Jason Behrendorff smashed 26 off just 16 balls but John Hastings (3-20) and Daniel Worrell (2-29) managed to see the Stars to victory.
