Stars vs Renegades

Big Bash League: Melbourne Stars defeat Melbourne Renegades

Stars win opener

Luke Wright: Blasted 70 from just 32 balls at the MCG

England international Luke Wright played a headline role as Melbourne Stars opened the Big Bash League season with a 76-run victory over Melbourne Renegades.

The limited-overs specialist smashed 70 runs from just 32 balls at the top of the order as the Stars posted a daunting total of 208-7 after being put in to bat.

Wright shared an opening stand of 95 with skipper Cameron White, who finished with a half-century, while Brad Hodge contributed 30 to the cause at the MCG.

The target seemed a tall order and the Renegades never looked close to chasing it down, Jackson Bird taking 4-31 as their city rivals bowled them out for just 132.

Another England star - Jos Buttler - was the Renegades' top-scorer but his total of 49 off 28 balls proved to be one of the only positives for Aaron Finch's side.

The match was effectively killed off as early as the seventh over of the chase as Wright showed his all-round abilities by taking the prize wicket of Finch (32) to leave the Renegades on 44-4 after Bird had already made inroads into the top order.

Buttler and Peter Nevill (25) then put on a fifth-wicket stand of 67 but Bird removed both in the space of two balls, having the latter caught off a top edge and making the former chop onto his stumps.

The rest of the line-up then quickly crumbled as the Stars secured the win with 16 balls to spare.

Earlier Wright had set the tone by smashing eight fours and clearing the ropes five times before being caught at long-on off the bowling of Muttiah Muralitharan.

White went on to make 53 from just 38 balls and by the time he had departed the Stars had already brought up the 150 with fewer than 15 overs gone.

There was still time for Hodge to hit four boundaries and Marcus Stoinis (15) to blast two sixes, putting the Stars well and truly out of sight.
