Big Bash League: Sydney Thunder end losing run against Melbourne Renegades

The Thunder snapped their 19-game losing run with success over Melbourne on Tuesday

Sydney Thunder secured a long-awaited Big Bash victory on Tuesday following a comprehensive nine-wicket demolition of Melbourne Renegades.

The Thunder had gone 19 matches without success in the competition, dating back to December 2011 when they bagged a six-wicket win over the Adelaide Strikers.

The Renegades batted first at Docklands Stadium in Melbourne, but home soil failed to help as they limped along to 104 all out from 18.3 overs.

One could have forgiven the Thunder for a nervy run chase, however Usman Khawaja (46 not out) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (46) ensured the result was never in doubt.

Sri Lankan ace Dilshan was in no mood to meander at the crease, bagging his runs from just 29 balls - an innings that included seven fours and a six before he became the only wicket to fall, caught at long off from the bowling of James Pattinson.

But it mattered little as Khawaja and Mike Hussey (9 not out) guided their side home with 51 deliveries to spare.

Duck for Finch

The Renegades won the toss and batted first, but not even in-form Aaron Finch was unable to make an impression on the scoreboard as he perished for a two-ball duck.

Alex Doolan (8) was next to go, although Daniel Harris and Ben Rohrer steadied the ship taking Melbourne to 61 before Rohrer (22) was trapped lbw from the bowling of Andrew Tye.

Michael Hill came and went, but it was the loss of Harris (30) with the score at 76-5 that proved the catalyst for a batting collapse.

The tail failed to wag with Aaron O'Brien (5), Pattinson (3), Nathan Rimmington (8) and Fawad Ahmed (8) being removed to set the Thunder a highly-attainable target.

Gurinder Sandhu was the pick of the Thunder's bowlers with figures of 3-21, while Ajantha Mendis took two wickets, costing his team 15 runs in the process.
