Big Bash League: Melbourne Stars stay perfect with win over Melbourne Renegades

Cameron White launches another big hit to the ropes during his unbeaten 84

The Melbourne Stars claimed local bragging rights with an emphatic nine-wicket victory over the Melbourne Renegades to maintain their perfect start to the Big Bash League.

Cameron White (84 not out) and Glenn Maxwell (58 not out) both hit unbeaten half-centuries to comfortably steer the Stars past their victory target of 164 with 22 balls to spare.

Aaron Finch had earlier also cracked an unbeaten 84 to help the Renegades post 163-5 from their 20 overs, but it would prove too little as the Stars cruised to 167-1 with plenty in reserve.

It means the table-topping Stars have won all four of their matches to date, while the Renegades have now lost on three of their five outings in this year's competition.

Paceman Jackson Bird got the Stars off to a flying start with the ball as he claimed three wickets in his first over of the match to tear through the Renegades top order.

Michael Hill was first to go for eight when he edged behind to wicketkeeper Matthew Wade.

Bird then trapped England one-day wicketkeeper Jos Buttler lbw for a second-ball duck and repeated the trick when dangerous left-hander Ben Rohrer was also adjudged leg before from his very next ball to leave the Renegades at 17-3.

Rebuilding job

Fourth-wicket pair Finch and Tom Cooper (60) embarked on a fine rebuilding job and put on 102 in a little over 14 overs before the latter was caught by White off the bowling of John Hastings.

But Finch accelerated well in the closing stages and struck a total of six sixes in his 55-ball innings to drag the Renegades up to a total of respectability.

However, it always looked like being insufficient after England's Luke Wright and White got the Stars off to a strong start, although White was very fortunate to survive after Buttler dropped a regulation catch at deep mid-wicket early in the chase.

Wright did depart for 17 after being pouched at long on by Hill to give left-arm spinner Aaron O'Brien the Renegades only success with the ball, but Maxwell ensured there was no let up.

The right-hander was in destructive form from the off and needed just 23 balls to reach his half-century as he too cleared the rope on six occasions.

In the end it was the Stars' No 3 who got his side over the line, edging past wicketkeeper Peter Nevill off the bowling of James Pattinson for a streaky boundary.
