Renegades vs Heat

T20 Big Bash: Melbourne Renegades beat Brisbane Heat to stay perfect

Aaron Finch (L): Top scored for Melbourne Renegades with 33

Ben Cutting (R): Man-of-the-match performance proved to be in vain

Melbourne Renegades extended their perfect start to the T20 Big Bash League after producing a late surge to claim a six-wicket win over Brisbane Heat.

The Renegades were well behind the required run rate in pursuit of 134 before smashing a combined 32 runs off the 17th and 18th overs to turn the tables at Docklands Stadium.

Aaron Finch top scored for the hosts with 33 but it was Tom Cooper (29), Ben Rohrer (27 not out) and William Sheridan (11no) who provided the crucial boundaries late on.

Ben Cutting had helped put the Heat in the driving seat with an unbeaten knock of 33 followed by an economical bowling performance of 2-12 off four overs, but the man of the match was ultimately on the losing side.

The Heat chose to bat after winning the toss but made a stuttering start as they slipped to 27-3 in the sixth over before Sri Lanka international Thisara Perera provided some impetus alongside a more patient Joe Burns (13).

The pair put on a fourth-wicket stand of 51 before falling in consecutive balls to Darren Pattinson, with Perera departing after smashing 38 from 24 balls including three fours and two sixes.

Chris Lynn then fell for a first-ball duck to Muttiah Muralitharan to leave Brisbane on 80-6, but Cutting led a late recovery to help his side set a respectable total of 133-7.

The Melbourne top order were more successful in defending their wickets but struggled to score at the necessary rate, with the normally explosive Finch only managing a run a ball prior to his dismissal.

At the start of the 17th over the Renegades still needed 46 from 24 balls but Cooper smashed two sixes and a four in the next seven balls before being trapped lbw by Kemar Roach.

Rohrer stepped into the breach with a huge six in the 18th over, while Sheridan also chipped in a couple of boundaries to complete the win with five balls to spare.
