Leics vs Gloucs

Norwell shines before rain

Gloucestershire and Leicestershire frustrated by the weather

Liam Norwell: Gloucs seamer finished with six wickets

Gloucestershire Gladiators seamer Liam Norwell claimed competition-best figures of 6-52 before his side's final Clydesdale Bank 40 Group A game of the season against Leicestershire Foxes was abandoned as a no-result due to rain at Grace Road.

The 20-year-old seamer took four of his wickets in a 15-ball spell as the Foxes were bowled out for 264 in 38 overs, with Shiv Thakor and Matt Boyce both scoring half-centuries.

A close game looked in prospect, but after only four overs of the Gladiators reply, rain swept in and the game was called off shortly before 6.30 with the visitors on 19-1.

Foxes openers Josh Cobb and Michael Thornely made the most of some erratic bowling from the Gladiators, racing to a 50 partnership in six overs.

James Fuller conceded 25 runs in one over, with Cobb hitting five boundaries, but Norwell had him caught at slip for 42 off 26 balls with the stand worth 65.

The Foxes continued to build on the excellent start, reaching 100 in the 12th over, with Thornely pulling Ed Young over mid-wicket for the first six of the innings.

When Thornely was caught behind off Benny Howell at 104, Will Jones and Shiv Thakor took over, sharing a third wicket stand of 49.

But Norwell then snapped up his second wicket, having Jones caught by Jonathan Batty off an inside edge after scoring 44 off 47 balls.

Holed out

England Under 19 international Thakor, enjoying a rich vein of form in the last few weeks, reached his half century off 48 balls with three fours but then holed out to deep midwicket off Howell.

That made it 194 for four in the 29th over, and the Foxes looked on course for a big total. But Norwell put them on the back foot with a fine spell that brought him four wickets for 18 runs in 15 balls.

He had Wayne White caught at long on, Ned Eckersley taken at mid-off, bowled Tom Wells

and then had Boyce caught at short fine leg after the left hander had just reached 50 off 47 balls.

Fuller picked up the last two wickets of Rob Taylor and Robbie Joseph as the Foxes failed to see out the 40 overs.
