Day 4 of 4
Essex win by 4 wickets

Leics vs Essex

LV= County Championship: Essex knock off 161 to beat Leicestershire at Grace Road

Ryan ten Doeschate: Played a key role with both bat and ball for Essex on the final day

Jigar Naik: Held up Essex's victory charge with an unbeaten 47

Essex gave their promotion bid a much-needed boost with a four-wicket win over Division Two rivals Leicestershire at Grace Road.

Ryan ten Doeschate got the visitors to their target of 161 in the final hour, the all-rounder following up his four-wicket haul with the ball earlier on the fourth day by making an unbeaten 37.

James Foster played his part in the run chase with 42 to follow up his first-innings century, the Essex skipper helping put on 66 for the sixth wicket.

The partnership continued the good work done by Mark Pettini (25) after they had suffered a shaky start, slipping to 47-4 with Alex Wyatt claiming three of the wickets to go down.

Although Foster wasn't quite able to see the job through to the finish Graham Napier came out to rush Essex over the line with three boundaries, the last of which sealed the victory with 3.4 overs remaining.

Leicestershire had begun the final day at 91-4 leading by 37, and when Shiv Thakor and Matt Boyce were out to successive deliveries with only 18 runs added, it suggested there could be a quick finish to the game.

The situation hardly improved when Michael Thornely and Ollie Freckingham also departed within a couple of runs of each other, both going to ten Doeschate's medium pace to leave the score at 135-8.

However with Jigar Naik leading the way, the home side's last two wickets added another 79 runs in 33 overs spread over two hours.

Naik and Hoggard, who made 24 off 73 balls, shared a stand of 43 in 21 overs before the former combined with Wyatt in a last-wicket partnership worth 36.

Last man Wyatt was finally out lbw to left-arm seamer Reece Topley (3-53) for 17, leaving Naik unbeaten on a season's best 47 off 141 balls.
