Friends Life t20: Lancashire hold off Leicestershire

Simon Katich: Lancashire batsman in action during Friends Life t20 match against Durham

Lancashire ended a three-game losing run in this season's Friends Life t20 with a four-run triumph over Leicestershire at Old Trafford.

Having made 155-4, Simon Katich top-scoring with an unbeaten 62, the Lightning managed to restrict their opponents to 151-7 after a dramatic finish.

A career-best 84 off 66 balls from Greg Smith, who scored a half-century in his only other appearance in this year's competition as well, looked set to be carrying the Foxes to victory.

They needed 21 off the last two overs with six wickets in hand before Kabi Ali struck twice in a hurry to swing the balance again, including dismissing the well-set Smith thanks to a sharp catch by Ashwell Prince.

Left needing 16 off the last, Leicestershire were unable to get over the line despite Michael Thornely hitting the penultimate ball of the match, from New Zealand international Mitchell McClenaghan, for six.

Lancashire had earlier looked capable of setting their opponents a larger target before the slow-bowling combination of Jigar Naik and Shakib Al Hasan put them in a spin.

The pair combined to concede just 42 runs from their eight overs, Shakib also picking up the wicket of Karl Brown, who was stumped, for 17.

By that stage the hosts had already lost openers Tom Smith (19) and Stephen Moore (26), but Katich continued his good form in this competition with five fours and a solitary six. He has now scored 199 runs from five innings.

Steven Croft weighed in with 16 and former South Africa batsman Prince contributed an unbeaten 14 from nine deliveries, two of which he hit for boundaries.
