Ferguson floors Knight Riders

Redbacks claim first victory of campaign in Kolkata

Ferguson: Match-winning knock of 70

A match-winning 70 not out from Callum Ferguson left Kolkata Knight Riders' qualification hopes hanging by a thread as South Australia Redbacks recorded their first win of the Champions League Twenty20.

Redbacks had Ferguson to thank for their opening victory, his unbeaten half-century ultimately proving the difference as Kolkata fell 19 runs short in pursuit of the 188-5 target set.

Batting first, the Australians scored consistently throughout, with Dan Christian weighing in with 42 from 27 balls and openers Michael Klinger (20) and Dan Harris (26) setting the tone at the start.

Ferguson, coming in at No.3, then smashed five boundaries and four sixes to help SA up to a daunting total.

Lakshmipathy Balaji was KKR's most successful bowler, taking 2-27.

That total always looked imposing for a team who have suffered back-to-back defeats to Somerset since the qualifying series began earlier in September.

Losing key men Jacques Kallis and Gautam Gambhir for 20 and nine respectively was critical and, from that point, they were going to need some remarkable hitting to get close.

Manoj Tiwary did his best, belting 40 off 31 balls, with two fours and two sixes before becoming Kane Richardson's second wicket.

The required run-rate continued to rise heading into the last five overs but the lower order battled bravely, Ryan ten Doeschate striking three fours and two maximums on his way to a 16-ball 32 and Rajat Bathia making a breezy 21.

Regular wickets undermined their progress, though, and Kolkata finished 169-9 with three wickets apiece for Harris and Gary Putland.
