Kochi clinch Kolkata win

Tuskers defend moderate total in thrilling victory over Knight Riders

Jadeja blasted three sixes and a four before grabbing two wickets in Kochi's victory over Kolkata

Kochi Tuskers Kerala clinched a thrilling six-run victory over IPL leaders Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday.

Kochi all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja blasted three sixes and a four in a quick-fire 29 before grabbing two wickets as the hosts fell agonisingly short of their moderate target of 133.

Put into bat after losing the toss, Mahela Jayawardene and Brendon McCullum gave the visitors a promising start at Eden Gardens, making 49 off seven overs.

But, after McCullum fell for 23 at the end of the sixth over, Yusuf Pathan struck with three quick wickets to remove Jayawardene (25), Brad Hodge (2) and Parthiv Patel (9), leaving Kochi on 65-4 after 12 overs.

Jadeja smashed sixes in each of the next three overs to bring up the hundred but Shakib Al Hasan removed his partner Kedar Jadhav (12) to limit the sixth-wicket stand to 35.

Dangermen

The explosive Jadeja was removed by Brett Lee in the next over before Raiphi Gomez and Vinay Kumar added 22 in a hurry, although some tight bowling towards the end of the innings limited Kochi to 132-7.

Kumar and RP Singh removed dangermen Jaques Kallis (6) and Gautam Gambhir (2) in the third and fourth overs of Kolkata's reply, and Jadeja bowled opener Mavinder Bisla in the next for 16 to leave the hosts on 37-3.

Tiwary and Eoin Morgan added 36 but Jayawardene caught the England batsman short of his crease at the non-striker's end with a direct throw while on 10.

Needing 56 runs in the remaining six overs, Tiwary eased the pressure with back-to-back boundaries off RP Singh.

However the left arm quick fought back to send Shakib Al Hasan packing for two before Pathan, batting with a runner after injuring his knee, top-edged Ramesh Powar to Muttiah Muralitharan.

Restricted

Jadeja struck again in the next over to remove Tiwary who was stumped after a 51 ball 46, leaving new pair Brett Lee and Rajat Bhatia needing to score at 10 per over to save the match.

Lee lasted just three balls before he holed out to long on off Muralitharan to leave Kolkata's ninth wicket pair requiring 26 off 15 balls.

Bhatia and Iqbal Abdulla struck 12 off Singh's penultimate over to give the hosts a faint sniff of an unlikely victory.

Yet Vinay Kumar restricted the home side to just seven runs in a tight final over to leave Kolkata seven runs short.
