Kochi Tuskers Kerala's IPL debut ended in a six-wicket defeat to Bangalore Royal Challengers at Nehru Stadium.
Brendon McCullum (45) and VVS Laxman (36) put on 80 inside nine overs as the Tuskers, one of two new franchises in this year's tournament, made a promising start.
But the runs dried up slightly in the middle over as, in particular Royal Challengers spinner Daniel Vettori (1-17), applied the squeeze to limit their opponents' final total to 161-5.
Bangalore lost Tillakaratne Dilshan (1) early on but stayed in contention thanks to forthright contributions from Mayank Agarwal (33) and Virat Kohli (23).
But Kochi looked in good shape when Raiphi Gomez (1-20) dismissed Saurabh Tiwary (26) in the 18th over, leaving the visitors needing 25 from the last 14 balls.
But AB de Villiers (54no) launched Gomez's next two deliveries over the ropes and new man Asad Pathan (12no) followed it with three boundaries in Vinay Kumar's next over to claim the win for the Royal Challengers with eight deliveries to spare.
