Ireland vs Scotland

Kevin and Niall O'Brien help Ireland defeat Scotland

Niall O'Brien: Led Ireland's run chase with an unbeaten 65

Brothers Kevin and Niall O'Brien both played leading roles in helping Ireland record a comfortable seven-wicket victory over Scotland at Stormont.

The Irish bowled their opponents out for 165, Kevin O'Brien and Max Sorensen both taking three wickets apiece, and Niall O'Brien's unbeaten 65 saw the hosts home with 102 balls to spare.

Paceman Iain Wardlaw gave the Scots a glimmer of hope when he dismissed openers Will Porterfield and Paul Stirling to leave the score on 22-2.

However Ed Joyce shared in a third-wicket stand of 69 to steady Ireland and although he was bowled by Majid Haq for 39, Ireland were by then in control.

Winning run

Niall O'Brien brought up his 50 off 54 balls with a clip to square-leg off Haq and it was fitting that he struck the winning run with a single down to long leg seeing him finish up on 65 not out.

Gary Wilson (35no) provided valuable support in an unbroken 75-run partnership that steered the home team to a second win over Scotland in three days.

The Scots, who saw their hopes of automatic World Cup qualification disappear with their defeat on Friday, had lost wickets at regular intervals during their innings earlier in the day.

Kevin O'Brien removed Matt Machan and Scotland captain Preston Mommsen in successive overs to leave the score on 61-4.

Calum MacLeod and Richie Berrington led a fightback of sorts with a partnership of 66 for the fifth wicket before the latter fell for 35 after chipping O'Brien to wide mid-on.

That was the start of Scotland's collapse as they lost their last six wickets for the addition of 38 runs, Sorensen (3-36) and Stuart Thompson (2-20) cleaning up the lower order.
