England Women win by 32 runs

India vs England

England ease past India at ICC Women's Cricket World Cup

Charlotte Edwards: Became leading run-scorer in women's one-day internationals

Harmanpreet Kaur: Scored valiant century in losing effort

Captain Charlotte Edwards scored a century as England got their ICC Women's World Cup campaign back on track with a 32-run win over India.

Edwards (109) became the leading scorer in women's one-day internationals as her side's total of 272-8 proved too much for the host nation to chase down in Mumbai.

Harmanpreet Kaur finished unbeaten on 107 as India reached 240-9 from their 50 overs, with Katherine Brunt finishing as the pick of the bowlers with 4-29.

The result ensured England bounced back from their opening loss to Sri Lanka and leaves all four teams in Group A on two points after the second round of fixtures.

After being put in to bat by India, Edwards needed 53 to surpass the previous record of 4,844 held by Australia's Belinda Clark and, after a slow start, she did that and more.

England were on just 5-1 after five overs but a century stand from Edwards and Sarah Taylor (35) put them well on course for a healthy total.

Lydia Greenway then made 29 off 27 before hitting Jhulan Goswami straight up in the air to Poonam Raut, while Brunt also added some impetus to the innings with 21 off 16.

Edwards fell shortly after making her century as she took off for a risky single and was run out, with wickets continuing to tumble late on as England attempted to up the run rate.

Arran Brindle did finish on an unbeaten 37 before India made a poor start to their reply, slipping to 29-3 after 7.3 overs.

Kaur and Karu Jain (56) gave the hosts some hope with a fourth-wicket stand of 106 but when the latter was snared by Brindle, England assumed control again. Kaur made it to the end unscathed but could not produce the miracle required for victory.

India stay above England in Group A thanks to a better net run rate, with West Indies topping the table after thrashing Sri Lanka by 209 runs.

Stefanie Taylor smashed 171 from 137 balls while Deandra Dottin hit 50 from just 22 to send Sri Lanka to the bottom of the standings, one place below England.
