India vs W Indies

India v West Indies: Hosts win first Test by an innings in Kolkata

Mohammed Shami: Took 5-47 and match figures of 9-118

Mohammed Shami took 5-47 as India completed victory over West Indies by an innings and 51 runs in the first Test at Eden Gardens.

The tourists were skittled out for just 168 in their second innings following an all-too familiar collapse that saw them slump from an apparently strong position at 101-1.

But Ravichandran Ashwin, who had earlier passed 100 for the second time in Tests, took two key wickets before Shami added to his four first innings scalps as he ripped through the middle and lower order.

As ever, veteran Shivnarine Chanderpaul provided staunch resistance but he was left stranded on 31 not out as the hosts won the first of two Tests between the sides.

Resuming on 354-6 in reply to West Indies opening effort of 234, India were eventually bowled out for 453 after centurion Rohit Sharma and Ashwan had extended their seventh-wicket partnership to 280.

Their stand meant the recovery from a parlous 83-5 was complete, laying the foundations for the bowlers to do their stuff.

Sharma, on his debut, was eventually out for 177 - lbw to Veerasammy Permaul - and Ashwin followed just three overs later having made 124, bowled by the tireless Shane Shillingford (6-167).

Chria Gayle struck seven fours in a positive response but after reaching 33 top-edged an ambitious pull from outside off stump and was caught off Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Kieran Powell (36) and Darren Bravo (37) put on 68 for the second wicket in more cautious fashion, and with the new ball successfully seen off batting appeared to become easier.

But that all changed when an Ashwin delivery pitched on a good length and hit him on the shin with tea only two overs away and Shami soon had Marlon Samuels lbw although the ball would have missed leg stump.

Bravo departed to extra lift in the second over after the interval, cutting Ashwin to Sharma at point and Shami tore through the middle order, Denesh Ramdin (1), Darren Sammy (8) and Shillingford (0) falling in quick succession.

Chanderpaul's inability to shepherd the tail only served to hasten the end, Permaul being run out after facing one ball with neither Tino Best nor Sheldon Cottrell able to hang around for long.
