High-scoring Chennai Test ends in predictable draw

McKenzie: Centurion

Neil McKenzie hit an unbeaten century as the first Test between India and South Africa in Chennai ended in a draw.

The in-form McKenzie, who had made 94 in the first innings, finished on 155 not out as the Proteas reached 331-5 in their second innings, having resumed on the final day at 131-1 - a lead of 44.

His fourth Test century guided the tourists to a lead of 254 before the draw was declared shortly after tea.

McKenzie hit 226 during a world record 415-run opening partnership with skipper Graeme Smith against Bangladesh earlier this month.

Defiant mood

And he was in defiant mood once again as he struck 13 fours and a six, adding 157 runs for the second wicket with Hashim Amla.

Amla, South Africa's top scorer in the first innings with 159, eventually departed for 81.

Indian off spinner Harbhajan Singh took 3-101 and claimed eight wickets in the match.

India scored 627 in reply to South Africa's first innings 540 all out on a flat pitch, with opener Virender Sehwag scoring an Indian record 319 and Rahul Dravid making 111 for his 25th Test hundred.

The second Test starts in Ahmedabad on Thursday.
