Under 19 World Cup: England beat India to reach last four

Ben Duckett: An impressive stand of 61 runs helped England beat India

Robert Jones and Rob Sayer helped England defeat reigning world champions and favourites India by three wickets to reach the semi-finals of the Under-19 World Cup in Dubai.

With England requiring 222 to win from their 50 overs, they got the job done with five balls to spare in a tense finish to the game to set up a clash against Pakistan on Monday for a place in the final.

Young Northamptonshire star Ben Duckett was able to get to grips with the sub-continental pitch quickly.

The batsman and wicketkeeper scored at a run a ball, taking on the spin, ending his stance with an impressive stand of 61 runs from 64 balls.

A 50-run partnership between Joseph Clark (42) and Jones (28 no) then helped Will Rhodes' side back on course before Sayer (10 no) hit the winning runs at a sparse Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

Fisher in form

India won the toss and took the decision to bat first. However, they quickly fell to 24-4 from 8.1 overs.

Bowler Matt Fisher produced a spell of sensational form to bowl out the cream of the Indian batting.

Vijay Zol came in to steady the ship by taking to score to 111. But the Captain fell just short of a half century after reaching 48 runs before being caught by Duckett off Sayer's bowling.

A fine stand of 68 from Deepak Hooda was helped along by 52 not out by Sarfaraz Khan as wickets continued to fall around them.

They set England a competitive target reaching 222-8, but the young guns just about squeezed into the last four by the skin of their teeth thanks to a successful run chase.

Interestingly, last time that an England side had beaten India in the knockout stages of an ICC event before today was at the 1997 World Cup.
