Holland vs Essex

Wright holds nerve for Essex

Dutch thwarted in final over of CB 40 clash

Wright: Kept cool

Holland came up one run short of causing a major upset in their Clydesdale Bank 40 match against Essex on Friday.

Chasing 219 for victory the Dutch side finished on 217 for six despite requiring only six from the last over, cool Chris Wright allowing just four as Essex returned to England with the points.

Matt Walker had been the star for a creaking Essex batting line-up, adding vital impetus after coming to the crease with the score on 98 for four in the 24th over.

Walker used his feet to good effect as he hit five fours and two sixes in his innings of 71 off 55 balls, adding 50 with Jaik Mickleburgh (46) and 51 with James Foster, who made a valuable 24 off 16 balls.

The hosts lost Nick Statham and Michael Dighton cheaply as the chase got off to a sticky start, but South African-born opener Eric Szwarczynski helped fashion a recovery.

He reached his half-century off 75 balls with five boundaries, providing the perfect foil for the more belligerent Bas Zuiderent.

The pair added 103 for the fourth wicket as Holland edged towards victory, Zuiderent cracking 56 off 54 deliveries with three boundaries and two maximums.

However, the pair fell to successive balls in one over from Graham Napier, Szwarczynski being run out for 75 by a direct hit from Dutch international all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate.

And when Zuiderent edged Napier behind off the very next delivery the game had an altogether different complexion.

The hosts required 16 off the final two overs with five wickets intact and Mudassar Bukhari hit a six off Napier's first ball as 10 came from the penultimate over.

However, Wright held his nerve by restricting the Dutch to just four runs in the 40th over, Bukhari taking one run to midwicket off the final ball before being run out by Grant Flower.
