Friends Life t20: Hampshire defeat Sussex in low-scoring thriller

Neil McKenzie: Held his nerve to guide Hampshire to victory

Neil McKenzie cracked the last ball of the match for four to guide champions Hampshire to a four-wicket victory over Sussex in their Friends Life t20 South group clash at the Ageas Bowl.

The experienced South African held his nerve as wickets tumbled in Hampshire's pursuit of Sussex's modest total of 118-7 and, with a single required off the final ball, McKenzie obliged by lofting the ball over mid-wicket to the boundary rope.

Hampshire looked to cruising to their target as they reached 73-1 at the halfway stage of their innings, but from a position of control the hosts inexplicably lost their way and McKenzie's winning shot was only their second boundary during the second half of their innings.

Chris Nash and Chris Liddle imposed a belated stranglehold, taking four wickets between them and conceding only 28 from their combined eight overs.

Nash had Jimmy Adams stumped in the 12th over and, when top scorer Michael Carberry (41) was caught on the cover boundary, suddenly Hampshire were in danger of collapsing.

Sean Ervine, Liam Dawson and Adam Wheater all then departed cheaply and at 112-6 with seven balls remaining Hampshire needed the know-how of McKenzie and Dimitri Mascarenahs (five not out) to get over the line.

When Sussex batted their total never looked likely to trouble the champions and they did not recover from losing Luke Wright (seven), Dwayne Smith (five) and Michael Yardy (one) in the first five overs.

Scott Styris (19) and Chris Nash threatened a mini-revival with a stand of 41 for the fifth wicket, but top-scorer Nash's fighting innings of 40 from as many balls could only delay Hampshire's progress for so long, Mascarenhas and Sohail Tanvir each taking two wickets.
