Kent secured their Division One survival and relegated Warwickshire in the process with a ten-wicket win over Hampshire at the Rose Bowl.

James Tredwell was the bowling hero for Kent as he took eight wickets in the match as Hampshire could only just about make the visitors bat again, but they only then needed to make 6-0 to clinch the victory.

Starting the day on 186-7, Hampshire only made it to 216 and they could not do much better after being made to follow on.

Michael Brown made 53 and Michael Lumb scored 89, including a fourth-wicket partnership of 81 with Christopher Benham, but Hampshire then collapsed.

Tredwell bowled a marathon stint of almost half the entire second innings overs and took another 4-114 as the hosts made 282 to make Kent make just half a dozen runs for the win.

It not only made sure that Kent were safe, but it also condemned Warwickshire to Division Two next season after they were thrashed at Lancashire.

Day Two

Kent took a strong grip on the game at The Rose Bowl with James Tredwell starring with both bat and ball.

The all-rounder was partly responsible for extending Kent's first innings to 495 with a half century before taking four wickets as the hosts slumped to 186-7.

Hampshire's attack - missing Chris Tremlett and Dimitri Mascarenhas - was put to the sword as Kent moved from 342-5 overnight despite losing centurion Martin van Jaarsveld with no addition to his 112.

But Geraint Jones (63) and Tredwell (62) added 83 for the seventh wicket while Ryan McLaren chipped in with a useful 35 not out to frustrate the home faithful.

Hampshire looked untroubled in the reply with Michael Carberry (46) and Michael Brown (42) putting on 79 for the opening partnership, but they collapsed after Tredwell removed Carberry lbw.

Brown then lofted the same bowler to mid-off before Tredwell bowled James Adams for three and Simon Cook removed Michael Lumb and Nic Pothas without scoring.

Tredwell also got rid of Sean Irvine for 20 as Hampshire lost seven wickets for 60, but Shane Warne and David Balcombe put on an unbeaten 47 towards the close - albeit leaving the hosts still 160 shy of the follow on.

Day One

Kent boosted their hopes of avoiding relegation by building an impressive first day total at the Rose Bowl.

Martin van Jaarsveld hit an unbeaten 112 and skipper Robert Key weighed in with 84 after winning the toss, as the visitors reached 342-5 against title-chasing Hampshire.

Kent openers Key and Joe Denly (54) put on 122 in 33 overs for the first wicket against a weakened Hampshire attack on a placid wicket.

But it was the South African van Jaarsveld who kicked on into three figures, not offering a chance on his way to a fifth First Class century of the season.

His runs came off 175 balls and included 14 fours, as he finished the day unbeaten alongside Geraint Jones (20no). The former England wicketkeeper had earlier survived a strong shout for a catch at short leg off Hampshire skipper Shane Warne.
