Hants vs Essex

Dramatic tie at Rose Bowl

Qualification to be decided in reverse fixture

Kaneria: Last-ball saviour

Twenty20 Cup - South Division
The Rose Bowl
Hampshire 164-6 Innings Complete (M A Carberry 51) v Essex 164-8 Innings Complete (J E R Gallian 55)
Hampshire tied with Essex

A dramatic tie between Hampshire and Essex at the Rose Bowl now means the reverse fixture at Chelmsford on Friday will decide who is guaranteed a place in the Twenty20 quarter-finals.

An enthralling encounter ended with the scores level after Pakistani tail-ender Danish Kaneria hit two runs off Billy Taylor's last ball to ensure both sides shared the spoils.

Needing 11 off the final over, David Masters struck a four to leave Kaneria needing to score three runs from the last ball of the innings to steal an Essex victory.

Kaneria struck the ball to mid-wicket, the ball bouncing just in front of Michael Carberry as Masters and Kaneria scampered two important runs.

Early trouble

Earlier, after winning the toss and electing to bat, Hampshire found themselves in all sorts of trouble after openers Michael Lumb (9) and Chris Benham (3) were both dismissed by Graham Napier in quick succession.

However, a steady third-wicket partnership of 79 between Carberry and Michael Brown rebuilt the Hawks' innings and set the hosts up for a final flourish.

Carberry made a well-crafted 51, and Brown departed for 44 before Sean Ervine blasted 28 off 14 balls to help Hampshire up to a competitive 164-6.

The Eagles' run chase started well despite the early loss of Mark Pettini who was run-out for just two.

Fellow opener Jason Gallian steadied the ship with a classy 55 off 42 balls as wickets fell around him at regular intervals.

It was the introduction of the dangerous Ryan ten doeschate that reignited the Eagles' innings as he hammered 26 off just 12 balls before Masters and Kaneria clinched a tie.
