Northants roar past Glamorgan

Visitors secure first win of the season after Swansea success

Lucas: Devastating spell

LV County Championship - Division Two

Northamptonshire 531-8 dec (D J G Sales 173, N J O'Brien 108, R A White 83) v Glamorgan 278 (J W M Dalrymple 82, M J Powell 63, J J van der Wath 4-54) & 154

Northamptonshire picked up their first LV County Championship win of the season after comfortably beating Glamorgan by an innings and 99 runs at Swansea.

After being forced to follow-on on the final day, Glamorgan got off to the worst possible start as the attempted to bat out day four and claim an unlikely draw.

The Glamorgan batsmen failed to cope with the right and left arm opening bowling combination of David Lucas and Johan van der Wath and capitulated to 7-4.

Lucas dismissed Matt Wood (1) and Mike Powell (0) as van der Wath claimed the wickets of Gareth Rees (0) and first-innings hero Jamie Dalrymple (4) to leave the hosts in turmoil.

Former Nottinghamshire seamer Lucas picked up his third and Northants' fifth wicket shortly after when he clean bowled Bermuda international David Hemp for 7.

Mark Wallace and James Harris bravely fought back with scores of 43 and 46 respectively, however when both players perished to off-spinner Jason Brown any feint hopes of salvaging anything from the game evaporated.

South African all-rounder Andrew Hall completed an impressive victory for the visitors by cleaning up the tail to finish with second innings figures of 3-5 off 2.2 overs.

Day three

Jamie Dalrymple's 82 could not prevent Glamorgan being asked to follow-on by Northamptonshire at Swansea.

Responding to Northants' 531-8 declared, the Welsh county were bowled out for 278 from the final ball of the third day.

That was 104 runs short of the follow-on target of 382 and means they start the final day requiring a further 253 runs just to avoid an innings defeat.

The lone bright spot for the hosts came when Dalrymple and Mike Powell (63) shared a 103-run, fourth-wicket stand either side of lunch.

But they were the only contributors of note as four different South African-born bowlers shared all 10 wickets for Northants.

Johannes van der Wath led the way with 4-54, skipper Nicky Boje picked up 3-45, Andrew Hall claimed 2-25 and Johan Louw (1-54) collected a solitary victim.

Day two

Rain and bad light frustrated Northamptonshire's hopes of tightening their grip on their clash with Glamorgan, as just 26 overs were possible on day two in Swansea.

Play did not start until 2.45pm because of rain, but despite the visitors' already strong position skipper Nicky Boje decided to bat on.

After resuming their first innings on 456-6, Northants added a further 75 runs before declaring at tea on 531-8 - only the second time a county side have passed 500 runs at St Helen's.

In declaring, Boje prevented Glamorgan from gaining a third bowling point.

The Northants players came on the field for the start of the Glamorgan first innings but in the increasing gloom the umpires, Mike Harris and Richard Kettleborough, took one look at the light metre before walking off back into the pavilion.

With the rain becoming more heavy and persistent the umpires called play off for the day at 5.15pm.

Day one

The runs flowed for Northamptonshire on the opening day against Glamorgan at Swansea.

Niall O'Brien and David Sales helped themselves to centuries as the visitors reached 453-6 after opting to bat first.

O'Brien compiled an opening stand of 126 with Stephen Peters (39) on his way to a 159-ball innings of 108.

The baton was then taken up by Sales, who contributed an explosive knock of 173 from 151 balls, featuring three sixes and 24 fours, and shared a 183-run, fourth-wicket partnership with Robert White (83), before falling lbw to off-spinner Robert Croft (3-94) late in the day.
