LV= County Championship: Hampshire win as Glamorgan chase fails

James Tomlinson: Took five wickets as Glamorgan failed to chased down 221

James Tomlinson took 5-44 to inspire Hampshire to a 43-run win against Glamorgan in their LV= County Championship Division Two clash in Cardiff.

After leaving Glamorgan 221 to win in 90 overs, Tomlinson ripped through the top order as the hosts were bowled out for 177.

Murray Goodwin (56 not out) and Mark Wallace (44) put on 80 for the sixth wicket but the damage had been done and Hampshire took home 21 points to Glamorgan's five.

At the start of the day Marcus North (5-30) completed his five-wicket haul as Glamorgan wrapped up the Hampshire innings in the space of 22 balls by removing last man Danny Briggs (15).

The total of 179 left the hosts chasing a catchable target, but they made a dreadful start to their victory quest by being reduced to 42-3 inside 10 overs by Tomlinson.

Wickets

Left-armer Tomlinson then made it four straight victims when he trapped North lbw for 15 as the home side slipped to 55-4, and David Balcombe chipped in before lunch with the wicket of Jim Allenby.

But either side of the interval Goodwin and Wallace launched their impressive recovery, with the home side looking comfortable until Wallace was trapped lbw to give Tomlinson his fifth wicket.

At that stage Glamorgan needed 83 to win from 35.3 overs with Goodwin unbeaten on 38, but Dean Cosker was removed thanks to a leg-side stumping off Danny Briggs.

Michael Hogan made a breezy 18, including 11 off a Briggs over, before he was caught trying to clear Neil McKenzie at mid-off off Sohail Tanvir. That left Glamorgan on 172-8 - needing a further 49 to win.

One over later Will Owen played on to Briggs making it 177-9, while Mike Reed lasted only two balls as Hampshire wrapped up the win with 22 overs remaining.
