Essex look set to reward Graham Napier with a chance in the longer format following his recent big-hitting exploits in one-day cricket.
The all-rounder has been in red-hot form with the bat, including an explosive innings of 152 not out against Sussex in the Twenty20 Cup, and is named in a 12-man squad for the trip to Glamorgan in the LV County Championship.
Napier and off-spinner James Middlebrook are competing for the final place in the starting XI.
Opening batsman Alastair Cook is absent on England duty and is replaced by Varun Chopra, who has scored three centuries in five innings for the second team.
"We've brought Graham Napier into the squad for obvious reasons because his confidence is sky high," first-team coach Paul Grayson told the ECB's official website.
"There is a strong chance we may only play one spinner (Danish Kaneria), so if James Middlebrook doesn't play, Graham will be in as the extra all-rounder."
Glamorgan are likely to replace out-of-form opener Matthew Wood with Ryan Grant.
Grant impressed during the Twenty20 Cup group stage, while Wood has struggled for Championship runs this season.
