Essex set up Kent final

Yorkshire collapse in pursuit of 286 at Chelmsford

Napier: explosive innings

FP Trophy semi-final
Essex 285-8 (A N Cook 95, G R Napier 61) v Yorkshire 198 (A W Gale 64, A McGrath 53)
Essex beat Yorkshire by 87 runs

Essex reached the final of the Friends Provident Trophy with a 87-run success over Yorkshire at Chelmsford on Saturday.

The hosts posted a total of 285-8 thanks to Alastair Cook's sensible 95 and a more explosive contribution from Graham Napier of 61 from 34 balls.

Despite half-centuries from Andrew Gale and Anthony McGrath, Yorkshire failed to keep up with the required-rate despite at one stage being 140-1.

And as it began to spiral above nine-an-over, wickets tumbled and the visitors eventually fell well short at 198 all out.

Essex's reward is a date with Kent in the final at Lord's on August 16, the first time they have reached the domestic one-day showpiece for 11 years.

Opener Gale had shared a second-wicket stand of 84 with McGrath after David Masters (1-38) made the initial breakthrough by removing Adam Lyth (21) courtesy of a dubious lbw, the ball having pitched well outside leg-stump.

Although both Gale and McGrath passed 50, they took far too long over those runs as Essex's collection of medium pacers and spinners kept things tight.

Gale's run out for an 84-ball innings of 64 was the start of a spectacular collapse that saw the final nine wickets go down for 58 runs.

Leg-spinner Danish Kaneria removed McGrath (53) and Dutch all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate followed-up with the wickets of Gerard Brophy (0) and Adil Rashid (0) in the same over. All three batsmen departed with the score of 152.

And Yorkshire's misery was soon complete as Ravi Bopara (2-32) and Kaneria (3-32) cleaned up the lower order to seal the comprehensive result.

Cook denied

Earlier, Cook's effort of 95 from 127 balls set the platform for a late charge from Napier, who blasted six sixes during a 34-ball 61 that got Essex up to 285-8.

Mark Pettini decided to bat after winning the toss in blustery conditions, opening pair Cook and Jason Gallian making a confident start against Yorkshire's new-ball attack of Matthew Hoggard and Tim Bresnan.

The opening stand was ended at 61 with the run out of Gallian for 28 when Bresnan's direct hit at the non-striker's end left him stranded.

Naved-ul-Hasan, playing for the first time since injuring his hamstring May, had Pettini (12) caught at square-leg to leave Essex on 82-2 in the 20th over.

Cook went to his half-century off 85 balls with six fours and took an immediate liking to the bowling of leg-spinner Rashid (0-35).

With a three-figure score in sight, Cook became the second run out victim of the innings, failing to beat Bresnan's direct hit from third-man after coming back for a second.

The left-hander had added 98 in 19 overs with Bopara (37), who soon followed his England team-mate back to the pavilion after edging Naved (2-41) behind.

Napier fireworks

But Napier was soon into his stride with sixes at Hoggard's (0-41) expense over long-off and long-on, although medium pacer Richard Pyrah kept Essex in check with two wickets in an over.

James Foster was caught behind for 10 and ten Doeschate managed just a single before holing out to McGrath on the midwicket boundary.

Napier, however, was undeterred and raced to his half-century off only 27 balls with five sixes and two fours, evoking memories of his 152 off 58 balls with 16 sixes in the recent Twenty20 match with Sussex on the same ground.
