Essex vs Somerset

Tresco ton flattens Eagles

Somerset win by record margin

Familiar sight: Trescothick was once again in free-scoring form

Marcus Trescothick blazed a century as Somerset crushed Essex Eagles by 143 runs in the Friends Life t20, the biggest margin of victory in tournament history.

Having been skittled for just 90 during the previous day's defeat to Sussex, Somerset arrived at Chelmsford with a point to prove.

And they did so in some style, skipper Trescothick leading the way with 108 not out after Essex had opted to field first.

The former England opening batsman hit 12 fours and five sixes during his 61-ball contribution, the second T20 hundred of his career and the highest score so far in this season's competition.

Opening partner Craig Kieswetter (7) fell to David Masters in the fifth over but Peter Trego (36) and James Hildreth (64no) provided excellent support for Trescothick as the visitors closed on 225-2.

Masters, with 1-21 from his four-over allocation, largely escaped the onslaught but the remainder of Essex's attack - in particular seamers Tim Southee (0-50) and Chris Wright (0-57) - went around the park.

Spinner Tim Phillips was mercifully withdrawn after a solitary over costing 23.

And Essex's miserable evening was completed when they collapsed from 36-0 to 82 all out.

Opener Ravi Bopara top scored with 29 - including a couple of sixes - but Southee (12) was the only other batsman to reach double figures in a debacle lasting just 10.3 overs.

Young seamer Craig Meschede picked up 3-9 for Somerset, while veterans Steve Kirby (2-19) and Murali Kartik (2-7) collected two apiece.

Essex's cause was not helped by the absence of Scott Styris, the New Zealander being unable to bat after seemingly pulling a hamstring in the middle of his final over and taking no further part in the game.
