Friends Life t20: New low of 74 for Essex as they lose to Middlesex

Joe Denly: Unbeaten 34 for Middlesex batsman in win over Essex

Middlesex sauntered to an eight-wicket victory over Essex in the Friends Life t20 South Division as the Eagles' batting misfired once again at Chelmsford.

Essex, who were dismissed for only 20 by Lancashire in the County Championship last month, were in danger of posting another miserable total when they slumped to 12-5 after skipper James Foster had won the toss.

They recovered a little to make 74, but that was still their lowest ever score in the competition and unsurprisingly it failed to trouble the Panthers as they raced to victory with over 10 overs to spare.

New Zealander Kyle Mills decimated the top of the Essex order as he removed Greg Smith and Graham Napier for ducks in his first over before dismissing compatriot Hamish Rutherford for two on his way to posting figures of 3-4 from three overs.

Gurjit Sandhu (2-15) then sent Jail Mickleburgh (1) and Ryan ten Doeschate (0) on their way before Foster joined Owais Shah at the crease.

Foster only made three but he added 27 runs alongside Shah before being bowled by Neil Dexter (2-18).

Shah added another 20 with Tim Phillips (16) but his departure for 39 - stumped by Adam Rossington off the bowling of Ravi Patel - ended any hopes the Eagles had of posting a competitive total and they were skittled for 74 with 19 balls remaining.

Shaun Tait (2-25) had Paul Stirling (2) caught behind by Foster to give Essex some early optimism as Middlesex began their reply and he then bowled Dawid Malan for 10 to leave the Panthers on 26-2.

But Joe Denly and Adam Voges safely saw the visitors to a victory which puts them level with Surrey at the top of the table.

Denly set the scene with three boundaries in an over off Napier on his way to an unbeaten 34, while Voges finished with 22 not out and Essex were booed off the field by some members of the home crowd at the end.
