England vs Australia

England slip to two-run defeat against Australia at the ICC Women's World Cup

Megan Schutt celebrates removing England captain Charlotte Edwards

Holly Colvin claims the wicket of Sarah Coyte

England's ICC Women's World Cup hopes suffered a setback as they slipped to an agonising two-run defeat against Australia in Mumbai.

England had put themselves in a strong position in the Super Sixes encounter as they dismissed Australia for 147 - with Anya Shrubsole (3-24) impressing with the ball once again.

However England's top order batting let them down as they were dismissed for 145.

Holly Ferling did the damage as she claimed 3-35, with Julie Hunter and Megan Schutt also weighing in with two wickets apiece.

England suffer setback

Charlotte Edwards, Sarah Taylor, Danielle Wyatt, Arran Brindle, Heather Knight and Jenny Gunn all fell cheaply before England fought back.

Laura Marsh (22) and Lydia Greenway (49) led the resistance with a gutsy seventh-wicket stand of 57, while Holly Colvin and Shrubsole took the game right to the wire with some late boundaries.

However England will have been aggrieved by the controversial leg before dismissal of Edwards, while Marsh was also on the receiving end of a poor decision.

Earlier Shrubsole, who had taken a career-best 4-21 against the West Indies, had ripped through the top of the Australian innings to help reduce them to 32-5.

And although a sixth-wicket partnership of 82 between Lisa Sthalekar (41) and Sarah Coyte (44) boosted Australia's total, Katherine Brunt, Brindle and Colvin combined to dismiss them for 147.

Brunt finished with 2-22, Brindle claimed 2-33 and Colvin picked up 2-19 - with Jenny Gunn also getting amongst the wickets.
