Durham (8pts) drew with Surrey (7pts)

Surrey finished at 83-3 in pursuit of a victory target of 270 against Durham at the Riverside.

Surrey opener Jon Batty was trapped lbw for a duck by Graham Onions (1-13) and then Onions' new ball partner Steve Harmison (2-34) chipped in with the wickets of Scott Newman (18) and Usman Afzaal (16) to leave the visitors at 45-3.

But experienced fourth-wicket pair Mark Ramprakash (25no) and Mark Butcher (21no) shared an unbroken stand of 38 to see Surrey to a draw, play being called off at 5.15pm due to poor light.

Durham had used the first 41.3 overs of the final day to extend their second innings from 76-2 to 228-9 declared.

The bulk of those runs came during a fifth-wicket partnership of 114 between Dale Benkenstein (63) and Phil Mustard (53), while Surrey off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq finished with 6-50.

Day Three

Durham built a 117-run lead with eight second-innings wickets still intact against Surrey before the weather intervened.

No play was possible after 2.45pm on the third day, by that stage the hosts had reached 76-2 in their second innings with Kyle Coetzer unbeaten on 22 in the company of Neil McKenzie (11no).

Surrey's first innings had earlier subsided from 123-4 to 183 all out in less than 15 overs, Graham Onions finishing with 4-73.

Ally Brown's 38 was the only note of resistance, he was eventually last out to become Stephen Harmison (1-27) only wicket.

Day Two

Mark Butcher struck an assured 65 as Surrey made steady progress in their Division One clash with Durham at the Riverside.

Chris Jordan (3-32) and Pedro Collins (3-78) helped wrap up the hosts' first-innings as captain Dale Benkenstein and Mark Stoneman were the only Durham batsman to come out of the North East county's total with any significant contributions.

At 209-6 the home side still had aspirations of posting a total in the 300 region, however the Surrey attack quickly dashed any such hopes as Paul Wiseman, Graham Onions, Mark Davies and Neil Killeen were all dismissed with just 16 more runs added.

The visitors' batting response got off to a dreadful start as openers Jonathan Batty and Scott Newman were both dismissed by Onions as Surrey slumped to 18-2.

England veterans Mark Ramprakash and Butcher batted majestically to rebuilt the Brown Caps' stuttering innings - a stand of 99 saw the visitors regain the initiative.

But Onions dismissed Ramprakash (31) after a smart catch by Neil McKenzie to claim his third scalp of the day with the score on 117.

Butcher's brave innings was brought to an end in the last over of the day as McKenzie was on hand again after Killeen had caught the left-hander's outside edge.

Day One

Mark Stoneman and Dale Benkenstein led Durham's recovery on day one of their County Championship match against Surrey at the Riverside.

Stoneman had run out fellow left-hander Michael Di Venuto as the hosts slipped to 13-3, but had put on an unbeaten 131 with Benkenstein by the end of the day as Durham reached 144-3.

Only 19 balls were bowled before rain prevented a resumption until 3.30pm, when West Indian Pedro Collins quickly removed Kyle Coetzer and Neil McKenzie.

However, that brought Stoneman and captain Benkenstein together and both men will resume on 58 not out on Thursday morning.

Stoneman reached his third first-class half-century off 137 balls, including five fours, while Benkenstein's brisker innings - he made 50 off 95 balls - featured eight fours.
