Friends Life t20: Ben Stokes on form as Durham beat Leicestershire

Ben Stokes: Scored unbeaten 41 from just 26 balls

Ben Stokes and Gareth Breese inspired Durham to a five-wicket Friends Life t20 victory over Leicestershire at Emirates Durham ICG.

Coming together on 56-5 in the 13th over in pursuit of the Foxes' modest total of 119-7, they shared an unbroken stand of 64 runs in just 5.4 overs to see their side to a third straight win in the competition.

After hitting five sixes in each of the two previous wins, Stokes hammered three more in his unbeaten 41 off 26 balls while Breese made 24 off 15.

With one North Group game left at home to Derbyshire on Sunday, Durham still have a slim chance of qualifying for the quarter-finals, but Leicestershire cannot progress.

Their defeat was tough on all-rounder Rob Taylor, who raised their hopes after a tame betting performance by taking 4-11 in four overs of accurate left-arm swing.

Boundaries

Durham scored only six runs in four overs in the middle of their innings, but when Anthony Ireland was guilty of a fumble at long-off the floodgates opened.

It allowed Stokes to go back for a second run and he hit two of the next four balls from Shakib Al Hasan for six over long-on and backward square leg.

In the next over he pulled Shiv Thakor for six, while Breese produced some clever improvisations in hitting four fours as then hosts chased down the target in explosive style.

After being put in Leicestershire did not get going at all until Taylor (12 not out) and Ned Eckersley (11no) scored 23 off the last two overs.

Chris Rushworth finished with 3-19 to stifle the Foxes, who were indebted to England Under 19 all-rounder Thakor for holding things together with a knock of 42.

A top order failure saw the visitors reduced to 55-5, and Thakor's innings and a string of smaller contributions from the batsmen at the other end ultimately proved not to be sufficient.
