Surrey Brown Caps 231-9 Innings Complete (M R Ramprakash 57,S A Newman 51) v Derbyshire Phantoms 218 (C J L Rogers 53,J W Dernbach 5-31, U Afzaal 4-49)
Surrey beat Derbyshire by 13 runs
Half centuries from Mark Ramprakash and Scott Newman alongside five wickets for Jade Dernbach gave Surrey a 13-run victory at Derbyshire.
Fresh from his 100th first-class century, Ramprakash hit 57 and Newman contributed 51 as Surrey made 231-9 from their 40 overs after being asked to bat by the hosts at Chesterfield.
Derbyshire opener Chris Rogers made 53 but his side kept losing wickets and with Dernbach taking 5-31, while Usman Afzal had 4-49, they were bowled out for 218 in the 39th over to lose by 13.
Surrey started solidly as Newman and James Benning put on 48 for the first wicket before Benning became one of Charl Langeveldt's three wickets.
Another solid partnership between Newman and Stewart Walters added 58 for the second wicket, before a mini collapse saw Walters go, Newman bowled for 51, Afzal run out for three and Matt Spriegel out for a duck.
Ramprakash stuck around to make his 57 from 51 balls whilst also combining with Jonathan Batty (34) for 69 in the only other meaningful partnership as Surrey hit out to 231-9.
Rogers top scored for Derbyshire with 53 from 77 balls, which included a 95-run partnership with skipper Rikki Clarke, who managed 44.
No-one could quite handle Dernbach or Afzal though, with the two Surrey bowlers taking nine wickets between them as the hosts fell just short.
