Derbys vs Surrey

Yorkshire Bank 40: Surrey and Derbyshire frustrated by rain

Steven Davies: Smashed a half-century in the little play that was possible

Jason Roy: Contributed to Surrey's explosive opening stand

Derbyshire and Surrey shared the spoils after their Yorkshire Bank 40 Group B clash at the County Ground was abandoned due to rain.

Persistent drizzle meant the start was significantly delayed and when play finally did get underway the contest was reduced to 19 overs each.

Surrey made a spectacular start to their innings, Steven Davies blasting 50 off 22 balls as the visitors reached 100-1 in just nine overs before the heavens opened again.

An attempt was made to restart matters, with the match chopped down to a scheduled 10 overs-a-side, but more rain meant that the players were not able to get back onto the field.

Ricky Ponting could do nothing but watch the runs flow and rain fall as his Surrey debut ended in a soggy anti-climax.

In the small amount of action that was possible, Mark Footitt pitched too short and was punished by Davies and Roy, who plundered 27 from his two overs.

The scoring rate soared when Alex Hughes came into the attack, with Roy driving and pulling his first two balls for four and six as 23 came from the medium pacer's over.

Davies hit nine fours in his half-century but he was out immediately afterwards when he failed to get hold of a lofted drive at spinner Peter Burgoyne and was well caught by Wayne Madsen.

Ponting had been expected to come in next but Azhar Mahmood was promoted in the order, although he faced only four balls before the rain returned and forced the players off with Roy 42 not out from 29 balls.

The weather improved enough for umpires Michael Gough and Neil Bainton to decide the match could resume at 9.30pm - but another heavy shower condemned Derbyshire to their second no result at home this season.
