Big Bash League: Brisbane Heat win thrilling opener against Perth Scorchers

Chris Lynn: Decisive contribution for Brisbane

Chris Lynn hit 81 as Brisbane Heat kicked off their Big Bash title defence with a thrilling three-wicket win over Perth Scorchers.

In a match which twisted both ways, Lynn's knock eventually proved decisive as he plundered six sixes and four fours to take the hosts to the brink of victory.

Lynn was dropped on the boundary by Michael Beer on 46 and rubbed salt in Perth's wounds by ending the same over with three straight sixes to put Brisbane back on track when they were falling behind the run rate.

Still needing 26 off the last 12 balls, Brisbane smashed 19 off the penultimate over to take a firm grip although Perth were given late hope when veteran Brad Hogg took an acrobatic catch on the boundary off Nathan Couter-Nile to remove Lynn with four runs still required off the final three balls.

With the batsmen crossing, that put Ben Cutting back on strike and the Brisbane No 8 delivered the winning blow via a thick inside edge which rolled to fine leg.

Earlier, Perth had made 151-7 off their 20 overs.

Shaun Marsh made 37 off 30 balls at the top of the order but the innings was given its real impetus by youngster Mitchell Marsh.

The 22-year-old clobbered an unbeaten 57 off just 35 balls, a knock which included five fours and a six.

That helped the Scorchers take 48 off the final four overs to set a competitive target but despite some wily spin from 42-year-old Hogg, who finished with 3-21 off his four overs, it was a total they couldn't defend.

In Sunday's earlier game, bad weather caused the match between Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers to be abandoned after just 36 balls.

In what little action proved possible, there were at least some lusty blows to admire as Nottinghamshire's Alex Hales bashed 49 (nine fours and a six) off 19 balls for Adelaide before being run out.

Michael Klinger was 32 not out before the Hobert clash was called off with both sides earning a point each.
