Heat vs Stars

Big Bash: Melbourne Stars maintain 100% record with victory over Brisbane Heat

Luke Wright: Got Melbourne off to a strong start

Melbourne Stars made it six wins out of six in the Big Bash League after surviving a late wobble against Brisbane Heat.

Set 145 for victory, it seemed to be a cruise for the table toppers as they eased to 80/1 with still over 10 overs remaining.

But James Hopes picked up Englishman Luke Wright for 37 and Brad Hodge for a single to give Heat renewed hope and the hosts then put real pressure on the leaders by dismissing Matthew Wade for 33 and David Hussey for 16.

That burst of wickets, which reduced the Stars to 112-5, meant Melbourne were behind on the run comparison charts with three overs left but the momentum swung back their way again when Rob Quiney smashed Alister McDermott for a six, a two and a four in the 18th over.

The Heat rallied again to leave Melbourne requiring six off the final over bowled by the inexperienced Mark Steketee and after taking two off the first ball Quiney was caught in the deep by Chris Lynn for 22.

But, requiring four off four, John Hastings turned his first ball to fine leg for two and then smashed a big six to seal victory for Stars and keep their perfect record.

Brisbane had earlier disappointed the record crowd of 32,456 by posting just 144 after winning the toss and deciding to bat.

They lost Luke Pomersbach for just a single and slumped to 53-5 before Dan Christian hit an unbeaten 68 off 48 balls (four 4s and three 6s) to give Stars some sort of target to chase.

A solid all-round bowling performance by Melbourne saw Jackson Bird take 2-25 and Lasith Malinga 2-21.

Wright, who took 1-25 as well as scoring 37 with the bat, was awarded Man of the Match for his solid all-round performance.
