Bangalore vs Kolkata

Duo keep Knight Riders alive

Gambhir and Kallis lead Kolkata to first victory

Gambhir: Led from the front with unbeaten half-century

Kolkata Knight Riders kept their qualification hopes alive with a vital nine-wicket victory over Bangalore in Group B of the Champions League Twenty20.

The Knight Riders, who lost their previous two group fixtures to Somerset and South Australia respectively, had captain Gautam Gambhir and Jacques Kallis to thank as they returned to winning ways.

Gambhir smashed an unbeaten 55 from 31 balls and Kallis (64 not out from 47 balls) carried his bat for the second time in three matches as Kolkata chased down a target of 170 with 15 balls to spare.

Knowing a defeat would end the Knight Riders' participation in the star-studded tournament, Bangalore, batting first, looked to take advantage of their opponents' vulnerability as Daniel Vettori's late surge took the home side to a challenging total of 169-9.

Vettori plundered 44 from just 23 balls to help his side recover after they had slumped to 91-6 in the 14th over of the innings.

However Kolkata sent wicketkeeper Brad Haddin up the order to open with Kallis and the Australian's aggression gave them the positive start they needed.

A 62-run opening stand, in which Haddin made 42 from 27 balls, set the tone for the innings and also removed some of the pressure from Gambhir.

The left-hander quickly found his feet and began to score freely, and only a late flurry of runs from Kallis ensured that the South African outscored his captain.
