Women's Ashes: Australia secure victory against depleted England

Australia Women beat England by seven wickets in the third and final Twenty20 international in Sydney.

England captain Charlotte Edwards poses with the team and the trophy after their 10-8 series victory

Australia Women ended the Ashes with back-to-back victories, beating England by seven wickets in the third and final Twenty20 international in Sydney.

England - who had already secured enough points to clinch the multi-format series - were only able to post a total of 101-8, their cause not helped by the absence of three players through injury.

Heather Knight (hamstring), Anya Shrubsole (hip) and Natasha Farrant (back) were all missing from the tourists' line-up at the ANZ Stadium.

A below-par batting performance was, however, the main reason for defeat, as Natalie Sciver (28) and Sarah Taylor (22) were the only two players who managed to pass 20.

Rene Farrell claimed career-best figures of 4-15 from three overs, which included removing England skipper Charlotte Edwards (12) and Lydia Greenway, who went for a first-ball duck, with consecutive deliveries.

Australia, in contrast to their opponents, had few problems in their run chase, opener Elyse Villani leading the way with 36 not out.

Alyssa Healy (22) helped put on 48 for the first wicket with Villani, who then played second fiddle as captain Meg Lanning made a breezy 23 from 20 balls thanks to three fours.

Visiting captain Edwards conceded the winning run as the hosts got home with nine balls to spare. However, she was soon all smiles at the trophy presentation, as England took the spoils by a 10-8 scoreline.
