Australia vs England

Women's Ashes: England wrap up victory in solitary Test

The England team celebrate winning the Ashes Test against Australia

England's women won their only Ashes Test match against Australia by 61 runs to put six valuable points towards their bid to retain the trophy.

Chasing 185 for victory, Australia had started the day on 57-5 after three quick wickets from Kate Cross had left the game very much in the balance.

Sarah Elliott and Ellyse Perry, though, had looked to frustrate the holders at the WACA with a sixth-wicket partnership.

However their 44-run stand was brought to an end when Perry (31) clipped Anya Shrubsole to Jenny Gunn at square leg.

Erin Osbourne failed to trouble the scorers as she also fell to Shrubsole, with sub fielder Danielle Wyatt holding on to the catch at extra cover.

Inside edge

Australia were reduced to 106-8 when Sarah Coyte (7) was trapped leg before by Gunn (2-13), while Shrubsole (3-48) bowled Rene Farrell (0) to move England to the brink of victory.

And the win came as Elliott's resistance (29 from 115 balls) was finally broken when an inside edge off Katherine Brunt (2-25) cannoned on to the stumps.

Three one-day international meetings and three Twenty20 games now remain in the series, with two points available for a win for each game.

Holders England need only win two of the six games to retain the trophy while Australia are tasked with winning five games from six.

The next appointment is an ODI at the MCG in Melbourne on Sunday and Australia captain Jodie Fields is looking for an improved display from her team.
