Windies fall short in Perth

Referral fails to save Roach as Australia clinch 2-0 series win

Australia beat West Indies by 35 runs

Doug Bollinger claimed the final wicket Australia required to win the third Test against the West Indies in Perth and wrap up a 2-0 series victory.

The tourists resumed on the final morning on 308-9 requiring another 51 with Kemar Roach, who had 13 to his name, and Gavin Tonge (21) at the crease.

The last-wicket pair managed to add a further 15 runs to the total to push the game closer to a thrilling climax.

Dreams dashed

However, in the fourth over of the morning their dreams were dashed when Roach (17) was given out caught behind by umpire Billy Bowden.

The drama didn't end there, though, as the tail-ender called for a referral as he was adamant he had not made contact with the delivery from Bollinger.

Replays failed to show conclusively whether there had been a thin edge or not, meaning the original decision on the field was left to stand.

Roach's dismissal meant the West Indies were all out for 323, making Australia's final margin of victory 35 runs at the end of a gripping game at the WACA.

The tourists had high hopes of pulling off a sensational run-chase when they stood on 196-3 during day four.

A clatter of wickets in the final session left the hosts on the brink but Ricky Ponting's side, who also won the opening Test in Brisbane, couldn't finish off the tail, despite calling for the extra hour.

Bollinger came up trumps on the fifth morning, though, the left-arm seamer dismissing the stubborn Roach to finish with Test-best match figures of 8-141

After hitting the fifth fastest Test ton in the West Indies' first innings, Chris Gayle claimed the man-of-the-match award. The visiting captain was also named Man of the Series.
