Ashes: England left frustrated as preparation ruined by the rain in Hobart

Umpires Simon Fry and Paul Wilson speak to the ground staff

England were left kicking their heels for a second successive day as the rain continued to prevent play in their match against Australia A.

Having seen the second day of action abandoned due to heavy showers and a wet outfield, England had been hoping to get their Ashes preparations back on track on Friday.

However no play was possible once again due to persistent rain in Hobart.

That meant England were unable to add to their score of 318-0 from the opening day, leaving Alastair Cook (154no) and Michael Carberry (153no) unbeaten.

Captain Cook now has to weigh up what to do should any play be possible on the final day of the match.

Kevin Pietersen, Joe Root, Gary Ballance and Matt Prior could all do with some time out at the middle, while England will be conscious on the fact their bowlers looked rusty in the opening match against the Western Australia Chairman's XI.

Stuart Broad and Graeme Swann have yet to bowl on the tour after being rested for the match in Perth, while Chris Tremlett is looking to stake a claim in the Test team.

England's preparations hampered

England batting coach Graham Gooch spoke of the "frustration" among players anxious to fine-tune preparations for the first Test in Brisbane in under two weeks' time.

"I don't think it's the sort of climatic conditions we expect when you come to Australia," he said.

"It's always frustrating for cricketers. You want to get out there and play.

"You want to show what you can do and get your game in good order, with big matches coming up.

"I think a lot of them are sanguine about it, because they are used to it - but it is frustrating."

England do have one more warm-up game before the first Test, with a four-day match against an Australia Invitational XI in Sydney.

However the early forecast is for the weather again to play a decisive role in the match.

You can watch day four of England's warm-up match against Australia 'A' live from Hobart at 11pm on Friday on Sky Sports 2 HD.
