Big Bash League: Adelaide Strikers go top with six-wicket win over Perth Scorchers

Michael Klinger: Saw out all 20 overs for Adelaide

Michael Klinger hit 86 off 55 balls as Adelaide Strikers moved to the top of the Big Bash League with a six-wicket victory over Perth Scorchers at the Adelaide Oval on Tuesday.

The 33-year-old batsman was unbeaten as he led the hosts' successful chase of Perth's 159-9 following a nip-and-tuck battle.

The results sees Adelaide climb into top spot with five points from three matches, although second-placed Melbourne Stars are only a point behind and have a game in hand.

Perth won the toss and elected to bat, but lost a wicket in only the second over when Shaun Marsh was run out for just two runs.

Sam Whiteman joined Simon Katich at the crease and the pair made steady, if unspectacular progress, taking the total to 58-1 before Whiteman was caught for 19 by Ben Oakley off the bowling of Adam Zampa in the eighth over.

Perth stutter

Katich fell to another Oakley catch in the following over for a more impressive 36 off 30 balls, Michael Neser the bowler this time, as Perth struggled to find top gear.

It wasn't until Nathan Coulter-Nile arrived that the visitors got going, with the 26-year-old finding three boundaries in four balls to move Perth on to 133 by the end of the 18th over.

By then they were eight wickets down after a spree of limp batting efforts in the lower order and although a ninth wicket fell in the 19th over, Coulter-Nile carried them to a closing total of 159 with 19 off the final over - including three successive boundaries - as he finished on 42 not out.

Adelaide got their chase off to a strong start, with openers Klinger and Alex Hales finding the boundary regularly as they rattled off 30 runs in the first three overs.

Klinger to the fore

England international Hales was enjoying particular success, but after hitting two fours and a six in the opening five balls of the fourth over, he pushed Yasir Arafat's sixth delivery straight into the hands of Katich and was sent packing for 31.

Philip Hughes and then Johan Botha both fell for single figures in the seventh and 11th overs respectively, but Klinger kept nursing Adelaide along and took them past 100 with a huge six over deep mid-wicket in the 13th over.

However, the hosts' run rate then dipped below the required mark and with five overs to go, they were left needing 43 runs from the remaining 30 balls.

Sixes from Klinger and then Nathan Reardon in the 17th and 18th overs respectively helped bring Adelaide back in line, and then Klinger rattled off the remaining runs with a pair of sixes in the 19th over, the latter sealing victory in style.
