Alex Galchenyuk struck an overtime winner as the Montreal Canadiens claimed a 3-2 victory over the New York Rangers in the Eastern Conference final at Madison Square Garden to trail 2-1 after three games.

Rangers left wing Carl Hagelin gave his side the lead in the first period but Andrei Markov and Daniel Briere turned the tie in favour of Montreal before Chris Kreider sent the game to overtime where Galchenyuk made no mistake as he clinched the winning goal.

Montreal goaltender Dustin Tokarski made 35 saves to frustrate the Rangers, with the 24-year-old earning special praise.

Canadiens coach Michel Therrien said:  "Dustin Tokarski was phenomenal tonight.

"He's a battler, and the most important thing, he's a winner ... without Tokarski's performance, probably the result would have been different."

Game four of the best-of-seven series takes place on Sunday at the Garden.
