Nottingham Panthers suffered a Challenge Cup hangover after crashing to a 4-0 home defeat at the hands of Braehead Clan in the first leg of their play-off clash.

The recent cup winners are staring an early play-off exit in the face after a nightmare opening leg on home ice.

The Clan outshot the Panthers 16-9 in the opening period, but, despite having more of the play, they only had a 1-0 lead to show for their efforts.

Panthers squandered two powerplay opportunities in the second period and the Clan made them pay through Neil Trimm.

Less than two minutes later the visitors were 3-0 in front as Ash Goldie fired home and the Scottish side went on to skate away with a commanding 4-0 lead through Joel Champagne with 97 seconds remaining.

Kyle Jones turned away the 30 shots he faced to claim a fifth shut-out of the season for the Clan.
