Kyle Okposo scored an overtime winner as the New York Islanders edged out the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2.

Casey Cizikas - in his 100th NHL game - and Thomas Vanek scored in the first and second periods to put the Islanders ahead, but goals from Brent Seabrook and Ben Smith sent the game into OT.

Okposo, who learned recently he will not be part of the United States team at the Winter Olympics, spared New York's blushes by sealing the win 58 seconds into the additional period.

Thursday's NHL results:

Bruins 3 Predators 2 (OT)
Avalanche 2 Flyers 1
Stars 4 Canadiens 6>
Wild 4 Sabres 1
Islanders 3 Blackhawks 2 (OT)
Senators 4 Jets 3
Coyotes 0 Blue Jackets 2
Sharks 5 Oilers 1
Blues 5 Kings 0
Capitals 3 Hurricanes 4 (OT)

It was a similar story in Boston where Brad Marchand scored 54 seconds into OT to give the Bruins a 3-2 win over the Nashville Predators.

Jarome Iginla and Johnny Boychuk also scored for Boston, while Viktor Stalberg and Shea Weber tallied for the Predators.

Jeff Skinner scored the third goal of his hat-trick in overtime to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 4-3 win over the Washington Capitals.

Skinner scored in the first and second periods - with Manny Malhotra netting in between - before completing his treble 1:20 into OT.

TJ Oshie scored twice and Brian Elliott stopped 30 shots for the shut-out as the St Louis Blues beat the Los Angeles Kings 5-0.

Max Pacioretty had two goals and two assists in the Montreal Canadiens' 6-4 triumph against the Dallas Stars.

The Ottawa Senators beat the Winnipeg Jets 4-3, the Minnesota Wild were 4-1 winners over the Buffalo Sabres and the Colorado Avalanche edged out the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1.

There were also wins for the Columbus Blue Jackets and the San Jose Sharks.
