The San Jose Sharks and the Colorado Avalanche both saw their perfect starts to the NHL season ended in their seventh matches.

Rookie Alex Chiasson scored the only goal of a shootout that lifted the Dallas Stars to a 4-3 win over the Sharks, who had led on three occasions during normal time.

Detroit Red Wings pair Johan Franzen and Pavel Datsyuk scored twice as the Colorado Avalanche fell to 6-1 for the season after a 4-2 defeat.

Detroit's efforts moved them to the top of the Atlantic Division in the Eastern Conference after the Toronto Maple Leafs were beaten 3-2 by the Carolina Hurricanes.

Joffrey Lupul and Josh Leivo put the Leafs two ahead going into the final period, where Carolina hit back through goals from Ryan Murphy, Eric Staal and Ron Hainsey to leave the Canadian outfit stunned.

Jussi Jokinen, Chris Kunitz, Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were all on target as the Pittsburgh Penguins claimed their third successive win with a 4-1 triumph over the struggling Philadelphia Flyers, who slipped to 1-7, the worst record in the NHL this season.

Tomas Plekanec scored twice in the final 70 seconds as the Montreal Canadiens defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 5-3 for their fourth consecutive win.

TJ Oshie's shootout goal gave the St Louis Blues a 3-2 win over the Chicago Blackhawks and Taylor Hall's double for the Edmonton Oilers was in vain as they suffered a 3-2 defeat to the New York Islanders.

The Florida Panthers suffered their third defeat on the spin after Reilly Smith's score gave the Boston Bruins a 3-2 win while Erik Karlsson and Jason Spezza each registered a goal and two assists as the Ottawa Senators dispatched the New Jersey Devils 5-2.

The Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Minnesota Wild 3-1, Anze Kopitar scored the sole goal in the shootout to as the Los Angeles Kings edged out the Nashville Predators 2-1 and the Vancouver Canucks scored in each period to defeat the Buffalo Sabres 3-0.
