John Tavares: Scored the shootout winner for the New York Islanders
John Tavares was the hero for the New York Islanders as they snapped a five-match losing streak with a 4-3 win over the New York Rangers.
Tavares scored the winner in the shootout after the match had finished 3-3 after overtime.
Colin McDonald, Tavares and Brad Boyes netted in regulation for the Islanders, while Dan Girardi, Marian Gaborik and Carl Hagelin score the Rangers.
The Washington Capitals recorded their third straight victory with a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Eric Fehr (2), Troy Brouwer and Jay Beagle scored for the Capitals, while Mathieu Perreault provided three assists.
The Lightning are now without a win on six despite strikes from Martin St Louis, Teddy Purcell and Nate Thompson.
Rene Bourque scored the only goal in overtime as the Montreal Canadiens beat the Florida Panthers 1-0, with Carey Price stopping 26 shots for the shutout.
The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1, the Nashville Predators overcame the Phoenix Coyotes 3-0 and the Colorado Avalanche saw off the Minnesota Wild 4-3 via a shootout.
